Along with Sun Tzu's The Art of War, The Book of Five Rings is considered to be one of the most insightful texts on the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asia. Composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi, The Book of Five Rings analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict that underlies every level of human interaction. For Musashi, the way of the martial arts was a mastery of the mind rather than simply technical prowess鈥攁nd it is this path to mastery that is the core teaching in The Book of Five Rings. This brilliant manifesto is written not only for martial artists but for anyone who wants to apply the timeless principles of this text to their life.

Two young boys are caught up in the world of fighting. Problems between pretty girls and guys are the catalyst for the fights.

In the story violence or bullying is a matter of everyday life. There is real fighting and suffering. There are victims but no heroes. Bullying and fighting are the featured story. Fighting organizations and bullies combine to put a stranglehold on an entire community. Names and races of those in the story are changed. This is not a feel good book.

Ninety percent of the book is the story. About ten percent is practical advice. As a practical matter, many people enjoy fighting for theater. This book is that too. Thus, those not interested in bullying and fighting issues may find the book interesting. The book is a journey to experience a fight.

The feature story provides a nice window to look at fighting and bullying issues. Martial art concepts of eliminating fighting and stopping bullying are on display.

Fighters are not exonerated or extolled. Fighting and bullying are topics which are addressed in meaningful ways. Limitations and productiveness of fighting are issues, and both are thoughtfully discussed. The feature story provides prerogatives to enable a better understanding of bullying and fighting issues.

Stopping bully behavior can be extraordinarily difficult. This story is no exception because it took five years to stop bullying around a handful of young beautiful girls. Accuracy in describing social conditions around fighting and bullying is the intent of the manuscript. Advice to stop bullying behavior is provided.

Profanity in the book is minimal. Some words are highlighted with asterisks in order to allow the book to be readable for a youthful audience. Profanity is only used in rare exceptions where no other explanation completes the narrative. There is no explicit sexual material in the book, but sex was a factor in living conditions. Sex is only mentioned because it was a catalyst for fighting, and the topic is handled with extreme care and caution.

In this captivating and lavishly illustrated young adult edition of her award-winning #1 New York Times聽bestseller, Laura Hillenbrand tells the story of a former Olympian's courage, cunning, and fortitude following his plane crash in enemy territory. This adaptation of Unbroken introduces a new generation to one of history's most thrilling survival epics.聽

On a May afternoon in 1943, an American military plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane鈥檚 bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary sagas of the Second World War.
聽
The lieutenant鈥檚 name was Louis Zamperini. As a boy, he had been a clever delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and stealing. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a supreme talent that carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when war came, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.
聽
Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a sinking raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would respond to desperation with ingenuity, suffering with hope and humor, brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would hang on the fraying wire of his will.
聽
Featuring more than one hundred photographs plus an exclusive interview with Zamperini, this breathtaking odyssey鈥攁lso captured on film by director Angelina Jolie鈥攊s a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the ability to endure against the unlikeliest of odds.

Praise for聽Unbroken

"This adaptation of Hillenbrand's adult bestseller is highly dramatic and exciting, as well as painful to read as it lays bare man's hellish inhumanity to man."鈥?lt;b>Booklist, STARRED

"This captivating book emphasizes the importance of determination, the will to survive against impossible odds, and support from family and friends. A strong, well-written work."鈥?lt;b>SLJ

"This fine adaptation ably brings an inspiring tale to young readers."鈥?lt;i>Kirkus

The 1970's. Kind of the forgotten time between hippies and yuppies, Woodstock and Starbuck's. Perhaps some White Sox and Cub fans would like to forget this decade, but this book says you'd be missing out on a lot of fun.

FROM BANKS TO BLOW-UPS takes you through a transitional period in the national pass time. It's before the time when salaries and even ticket prices rival countries' GDP, but it is a few years after expansion, franchise re-location, and the more innocent era.

The 70's in Chicago baseball meant a changing of the guard--from the old school Leo Durocher, who tried managing players as they were from the 30's but failed... to the maverick Veecks who would try anything to get fans in the stands--even blowing up disco records between games of a double-header (still remains the last time a ball game was forfeited in the American League).

Baseball fans will enjoy reliving games they may have attended, and watching players they may have cheered or jeered. While some Chicago teams did contend (Sports Illustrated once did a feature on Chicago baseball in the middle of a pennant race in '77. It simply read: "Chi, Oh My!"), most Chicago clubs weren't relevant. But there's more than that--colorful characters galore: managers ditching the club, players fighting one another, teams donning short pants in the summer time, HIT MEN who couldn't field, and BIG MEN who could pitch. Sluggers who launched baseballs on neighbor's front lawns, ethnic nights, and lots of day baseball. What begins with the book LIKE NIGHT AND DAY is sustained and developed in FROM BANKS TO BLOW-UPS.

This baseball era coincides with a young man coming of age. Navigating his way through the tumult of high school and college, baseball is base. Safe, secure, and constant--no matter what life held, baseball was a for sure thing.

The book concludes with the highlights from the decade. Many of which will surprise you. The most memorable moments of the decade are featured in box score fashion--this book is loaded with "I remember him, them, it" refreshers.

If you like baseball and lived through the 70's, this book makes for an enjoyable read. If you came of age later, well, think of FROM BANKS TO BLOW-UPS as a fun history lesson without having to memorize too many dates.
